GCSE Coursework and Modular Examinations Letter 08.09.09
Aah, green jumpers, those were the days! And, what a smart bunch Year 10 are! Students have been knuckling down and have made a good start to their GCSE courses, balancing the demands of their courses with extra-curricular activities.
PSHE has been really active this term. Students were treated to an informative and lively production of ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ from an Exeter based theatre company which aimed to increase awareness of issues surrounding sexual health. Students have also been busily applying for their Work Experience placements which take place on the week beginning June 10th. Future career interests have been reflected by the diverse range of placements applied for so that letters and phone calls have been flying off everywhere from Law Courts to Leisure Centres.
Well done to all those who auditioned for the Upper School Production of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’. Over twenty five of the year group braved auditions and the final cast reflects how much talent and enthusiasm this year group has for Performing Arts. Talking of talent, huge congratulations go to Sophie Thompson-Smith (10W) who has made it through to the Bristol Regional Final of ‘Open Mic’. Sophie wowed the judges with ‘The Writing on the Wall’, co-written with her Dad. We wish you the best of luck at the final which takes place in St Georges on October 31st in front of hundreds of people! Hopefully, we’ll hear you sing in assembly, Sophie, (Mr Edwards loves a duet!)
Musical talents were also displayed earlier in the term at the Colston Hall at an event called ‘Sax Massive’. Well done to Cat Shaw, Luke Joyner, Nick Matthews and Niamh Millers who performed a piece entitled ‘The Living Bridge’ with famous saxophonist Andy Shephard.
Whilst the rest of Year 10 will hopefully be revising for Science Module exams on 19th November, Faye Denning is off to Sorocaba in Brazil where, as part of her volunteering work as a Youth Worker in Hartcliffe, she will be meeting young people in orphanages and clinics. Well done Faye, we wish you luck and hope it’s an amazing experience for you!
Year 10 Sport Report – Mr Edwards and Ms Daly
Rugby - Played 6 - Won 4 - Lost 2
Man of the Match – Sam Chung / Ben Melhuish / Dan Bray / Ed Jones / George Jones / James Blackwell / Joe Howe
The school’s rugby teams were promoted this year into Division 2 and some tough fixtures have been played. Overall Mr Edwards has been happy with the progress of the team especially in the league. The boys await conformation of the opposition they will face in the BANES Cup semi-final. New players – Dan Bray, Dan Gordon and Joe Howe have made a real impact.
Football – Played 2 - Won 2
A home fixture against Redland High School kick-started the English Schools Cup. After a frustrating opening 15 minutes and despite some early lack of discipline, the Chew players began to play some decent football and scored 9 goals to ease to victory. Hard working Shaun Ford was awarded man of the match. This is a talented group of players who, with some hard work, could go far in this competition.
Hockey - Played 3 - Won 1 - Lost 2
In the first friendly game of the season, home to Ralph Allen, we played poorly to start but redeemed ourselves after half time scoring two goals bringing the final score to 3-2 with Ralph Allen scoring their last goal to win them the game. Player of the match was Jasmine Williams.
In our first league game, Chew Valley took on rivals Wellsway who are renowned for their strong hockey teams. Clearly Chew Valley’s hard work during training had paid off as the team gave an outstanding performance. Unfortunately for us Wellsway won 1-0. Player of the match was Carly Marsh.
The most recent fixture boosted the confidence of Chew Valley players as we finally had a well deserved win against Oldfield. Again, the nominated player of the match was Carly Marsh.
Over forty students have also signed up for the first Ten Tors training event on 21st October. Students will be dusting off their hiking boots as they spend the day walking through the Black Mountains. Let’s hope someone remembers the chocolate biscuits- Miss Hellier?!
