Year Eight

On 8 October we were visited by two representatives from the National Osteoporosis Society during our PSHE session. They delivered a presentation outlining the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle in order to prevent osteoporosis in later life. The presentation was both entertaining and informative. As a follow-up to this, students from year 8 will be invited to take part in a fun dance workshop on 11 November. We will ask for a contribution of £1 to take part to supporg the work carried out by the society.

The year 8 football team have been in cup action in September, winning round one games in both the National and County competitions. In the National cup we played a good Worle side, drawing 1-1 in normal time, Ryan Parfitt having given Chew the lead. In extra-time Chew regained the initiative they had lost in the second half and were unlucky to concede an excellent breakaway goal. Numerous chances and goalmouth scrambles ensued as Chew searched for an equaliser, Sam Lewis finally scoring in the dying seconds to send the game into a penalty shoot-out. All of Chew’s penalty takers scored comfortably – Harry Sparkes, Phoenix Holvey, Joe Cowell and Sam Lewis, Corey Tainton saving superbly from a good, well-struck penalty to put us into the next round. The man-of-the-match award went to Joe Cowell and Harry Sparkes.

In the County cup our victory was a little more comfortable, although the 4-1 margin didn’t do justice to a skilful Broadlands side who played some very good football, Joe Cowell’s hat-trick and a strike from Jordan Bishop proving decisive. It was an excellent team performance but Ollie Morgan dominated at the back and Sam Lewis drove us forward throughout the game and they shared the man-of-the-match award.

Our rugby team has got off to a wonderful start this season. We beat Broadlands School 56-5 in the cup (Jack Mead was man-of-the-match). We have also had two resounding victories in the league beating Ralph Allen 37-17 (man-of-the-match was Alex Monk) and Writhlington School 36-7 (Ollie Morgan and Charlie Hacker were joint men-of-the-match).

All the players have shown high levels of commitment in defence while in attack some impressive evasive running skills from Joe Cowell, Charlie Hacker, Oli Morgan and Oli Garland have recently left a number of players in their wake!  A number of forwards – Mickey Hewitt, Jack Mead and Ryan Parfitt – have played a significant role in ensuring quick and secure ball for Jack Tibbs and Reece Carter to distribute quality ball to the backs who continue to distribute the ball effectively.

In the semi-final of the District Cup Chew Valley won 29-0 against Wellsway with Charlie Hacker and Alex Price having joint man of the match awards after showing superb attacking and defensive qualities.

Our netball team has also made an impressive start to the season.  In the first match against Wellsway School we got off to a slow start but the quality of our play was still very good.  After half time the team played brilliantly and worked really well together! As a result, the final score was  21-1 and the player of the match was Jemima Gregson. Our second match was against Oldfield Sports Academy in Bath. As in the first match the girls all worked really well as a team, thought about game technique and achieved a good standard and got another win! The final score was 21-1 and the player of the match was again Jemima Gregson

Elections will be taking place at the end of term for the position of “Year 8 Representative”. Thirteen prospective candidates will present their manifestos in assembly and then all students will have the opportunity to vote. The successful candidates will  attend School Council forums, report back to the year group and liaise with the Head of the Year to raise any issues.

And, finally, congratulations to Bradley Saunders (8H) who has been selected to swim for “Team Bath”. We look forward to following Bradley’s progress in the future!
