Elise wins Bristol poetry competition
Elise Davies in Year 11 has won a poetry competition held in Bristol. The ’Why We Love Poetry’ exhibition was hosted by ten of the best poets writing for young people in the UK. The aim was to produce poems which puzzle, buzz and sting, poems which lilt, whisper and sing, poems which enlighten, linger or stun, poems which are silly, cheeky and, of course, fun! Elise won the children’s category and the poem was put on display at the Arnolfini Art Centre. Having previously won first prize in the Bath Literature Festival Young Writers' Competition, Elise is clearly a gifted poet. Congratulations to her. Here is the winning poem:
An Elephant’s Feelings
I look through the bars,
Sadness runs through me,
The coldness of the bars trapping me inside,
With nothing but a bucket of food as company,
My happiness left me years ago,
Left me in this cold place.
I watch and listen to the chatter,
The laughter of the excited children,
Memories of my life in Africa,
Drifting away day by day.
I dream of being an individual,
Having a life of my own,
I wish to be free,
Just like elephants should be.
My life is an unhappy display,
A display of my elephant features,
I see hundreds of different people,
But they never seem to see me.
If only I could be happy,
Be back in Africa where I belong,
I might feel part of a family,
And be loved for the rest of my days.
